Press brake questions, answered in one place
These are the questions we are asked most, grouped by the decision they help with. Each answer here is the short version — the link is the full guide, written for the person who has to specify a machine before a budget is signed off.
Choosing a machine: tonnage, size and spec
How much tonnage does a press brake need?
Work backward from your worst single bend — thickest material, longest length, hardest alloy, smallest V-opening — not from a tonnage number. Bend length and throat depth fail more parts than tonnage does. Read the full guide →
Is 4 ft or 60 ton the right starting question?
Neither, on its own. A press brake has at least four independent capacities: tonnage, bend length, throat depth and open height. Size all four from your part envelope. Read the full guide →
What do the specification numbers actually mean?
Nominal pressure, bed length, throat, daylight, stroke, open height and axis counts — and which of them are marketing rather than measurement. Claims need their test conditions. Read the full guide →
Should I buy used or new?
Used makes sense on mechanical simplicity with brand support; it rarely makes sense on servo controls and closed-loop hydraulics, where a bargain becomes an orphan. Read the full guide →
Power, installation and delivery
Can I run a press brake on 220V single phase?
It depends on the drive and the tonnage, not the nameplate. Single phase works up to a practical ceiling; above it a phase converter or a three-phase service is the answer. Read the full guide →
What electrical service does a press brake need?
Voltage, amps and breaker sizing for 208V, 240V and 480V three phase — how to work out full-load current, and what to ask before the electrician arrives. Read the full guide →
What should I prepare before the machine arrives?
Power, lifting, floor loading, levelling — plus an acceptance checklist to run on delivery day, before final payment. Read the full guide →
How long does delivery take?
Standard machines ship against published lead times; custom frames and configurations add engineering and first-article time. The honest answer depends on the deviation from standard. Read the full guide →
Tooling, accuracy and technique
Why does tooling affect accuracy more than the machine?
Worn, mismatched or unpolished tooling produces angle error, marking and drift that no control class can correct. Check tooling first — it is cheaper. Read the full guide →
Are all press brake tooling systems interchangeable?
No. European, Wila, Amada-style, American and Chinese clamping systems are not interchangeable, and the choice made at order time is the choice you keep. Read the full guide →
Why are my bend angles different at each end of the bed?
Ram and bed deflection under load. Crowning compensates for it at design load — diagnose with a long coupon measured at several stations before blaming the control. Read the full guide →
Air bending, bottoming or coining?
Three different processes with very different force requirements. The method you choose changes the tonnage you should buy, often by multiples. Read the full guide →
How do I calculate bend allowance and K-factor?
From thickness, inside radius, bend angle and K-factor — the formulas, a typical chart, and a worked example that gets the same flat pattern two ways. Read the full guide →
Importing, duty and shipping
What does it really cost to import a press brake from China?
Machine plus freight, insurance, duty, clearance, rigging, electrical work and commissioning — worked line by line, including the costs that never appear on the machine quote. Read the full guide →
What HS code and duty applies?
Heading 8462 for the machine, with different subheadings for NC and non-NC — and additional duties that matter more than the base rate. Your broker confirms the classification in writing. Read the full guide →
What documents arrive with the machine?
Invoice, packing list matched to the crate, certificate of origin, inspection and test record, drawings, and the CE file where applicable. Read the full guide →
How is a machine packed for sea freight?
Rust preventative on machined surfaces, sealed openings, blocked and braced for sea lashing — the packing is designed for weeks of salt air, not a local delivery. Read the full guide →
Safety and maintenance
What guarding does a press brake need?
Point-of-operation guarding sized from measured stop time — OSHA 1910.212 and ANSI B11.3 in the US, the Machinery Directive in the EU. The die change is the most dangerous minute of the day. Read the full guide →
How often should the hydraulic oil be changed?
First change around 500 hours, then on condition — sample it. Contaminated oil causes most servo and control faults that look like electrical problems. Read the full guide →
My angles drift during a long run — what do I check first?
Oil temperature and warm-up first, then crowning, tooling clamping and the backgauge. A symptom-by-symptom diagnosis is in the troubleshooting guide. Read the full guide →
Buying from KECMT
What is tested before a machine ships?
The full inspection sequence ending in loaded test bends in real material, with the measurements compiled into a documentation pack that travels with the machine. Read the full guide →
What does the warranty cover?
Manufacturing defects for the agreed period, with wear parts and maintenance staying with the owner. The binding terms are the ones in your order contract. Read the full guide →
Can I see a machine running before I order?
Yes — at exhibitions, or a trial bend on your own material on the factory test floor. Remotely, a video report of your specific serial number. Read the full guide →
Do you sell through distributors?
Selectively, and we say so honestly. Talk to us about territory, support expectations and what the arrangement actually involves. Read the full guide →
Calculators and selectors
If your question starts with “how many tons” or “what V-die,” the calculators answer it with your numbers rather than a rule of thumb: the tonnage calculator, the bend allowance calculator, the V-die selector and the machine selector.

Send the part, the material and the thickness. We answer with a configuration, not a brochure.
