Press brake tooling: punches, dies and clamping
The machine is rated in tons, but the tooling is what touches the part — and tooling is where bend quality, radius choice and machine damage are decided. Here is how the systems differ and how to specify tooling that survives your work.

Why the clamping system decides everything
Tooling is held by the ram clamp and the bed clamp, and the clamp geometry is machine-specific. Order tooling for the wrong system and it will either not mount or — worse — mount with the wrong load path and slowly destroy the clamp. Thetooling guide covers the systems in detail; the short version is that European, Wila, Amada-style, American and Chinese systems are not interchangeable, and adapters only exist for some transitions.
Punch types by the problem they solve
- Standard upright punch — the default for open flanges.
- Gooseneck punch — clears a flange that has already been formed, for U-channels and return flanges.
- Offset punch — bends close to an upright wall.
- Finger / segmented punch — box and pan work, where the formed sides must pass through the tooling.
- Flattening and hemming punches — the second hit that closes a hem flat.
- Acute punch — sharper angles than a standard 90° tool allows.
Dies by the job
- Single V die — one opening, one job; simple and cheap per opening.
- Multi-V die (e.g. four V) — several openings in one body, covering a thickness range without changing dies.
- Spring / self-opening die — reduces marking on sensitive finishes.
- Hemming die — wide, shallow, matched to the hemming punch.
- Radius and channel dies — purpose openings for specific radii or profiles.
The V-opening you need follows from your material thickness — theV-die selector turns thickness into the opening and the tonnage per foot that comes with it.
Ratings, wear and the real cost
- Tonnage per metre: every tool has a rating; it is frequently the limit, not the machine.
- Material and hardness: hardened working surfaces on a tough body; too hard chips, too soft marks and rolls.
- Polish for stainless: polished tooling is not cosmetic — rough tooling embeds and tears on stainless and aluminium.
- Segmented economics: standard segments let you build any working length and replace only the damaged section.
Specifying tooling with the machine
Tell us the tooling system you already own, the thickness range you bend, the alloys, and whether boxes or enclosures are in the mix. We will ship the machine set up for your clamping standard and quote a working tooling set alongside it — retrofitting tooling later means buying it twice. Thetooling and accuracy guide covers how tooling condition shows up as bend error.
